iPhone SE vs iPhone 6S Comparison & Spec

APPLE ANNOUNCED the iPhone SE last week, following months worth of speculation surrounding the device. The handset represents the company's attempt to capture the 4in mobile market and those still sporting older devices.

We'll touch first on the glaringly obvious difference in screen size along with a few other things you might find interesting.

Display

iPhone SE: 4in, 1136x640 resolution at 326ppi
iPhone 6S: 4.7in, 1334x750 resolution at 326ppi

Despite the iPhone SE's smaller 4in screen size, it boasts the same 326ppi pixel density as the more expensive iPhone 6S. The 6S offers a 1400:1 contrast ratio, compared to the 800:1 found on the SE (in this case, higher is better).

Apple has also cut 3D Touch support for the smaller phone so you won't be able to take advantage of the new pressure sensitive gestures.

Dimensions and design

iPhone SE: 124x59x7.6mm, 113g
iPhone 6S: 138x67x7.1 mm, 143g

The 6S is also noticeably thinner - it does a good job of disguising that extra weight.

Processor

iPhone SE: 64-bit A9 SoC processor (two 1.8GHz cores), M9 motion coprocessor, 2GB RAM
iPhone 6S: 64-bit A9 SoC processor (two 1.8GHz cores), M9 motion coprocessor, 2GB RAM

Both handsets include the very same A9 chipset and RAM. This is something of a boon for the iPhone SE as it means it has enough power under the hood to compete with top-tier phones.

Touch ID

iPhone SE: First generation fingerprint sensor
iPhone 6S: Second generation fingerprint sensor

To its credit, the iPhone SE utilises Apple's Touch ID technology that provides that added security benefit. But the firm has insisted on the first generation sensor, as opposed to the newer, faster second-generation found on the likes of the iPhone 6S.

Cameras

iPhone SE: Rear 12MP camera, f/2.2, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash, 1.22 µm pixel size, simultaneous 4K video and 8MP image recording

Front 1.2MP, f/2.4, 720p@30fps, face detection, HDR, FaceTime

iPhone 6S: Rear 12MP camera, f/2.2, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash, 1.22 µm pixel size, simultaneous 4K video and 8MP image recording

Front 5MP, f/2.2, 1080p@30fps, face detection, HDR, FaceTime

The impressive 12MP iSight camera means you can do all of the tricks found on the 6S, including fun curios such as Live Photos.

Battery

iPhone SE: 1,642mAh
iPhone 6S: 1,715mAh

In real world tests the iPhone 6S averages around 12 hours-worth of mixed usage, and at worst can last you through a day. The iPhone SE is said to match this 12-hour running time.

Storage

iPhone SE: 16/64GB configurations
iPhone 6S: 16/64/128GB configurations

The iPhone SE is limited by its storage capacity. If you're after the larger 128GB model (as found on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus) you're fast out of luck.

Price

iPhone SE: 16GB £359, 64GB £439
iPhone 6S: 16GB £539, 64GB £619, 128GB £699

As you can see the iPhone SE specs many of the 6S internals, and at nearly £200 cheaper it could be a serious choice for those in the market for a smaller iPhone. Of course, the 4in screen isn't for everyone, but it does represent excellent value for money.

iPhone 6S and SE specs overall comparison

The inclusion of the same A9 processor and 12MP camera found in the beefy iPhone 6S, indicates that Apple has not just set its sights on making a making a fast buck. Instead, we believe that the SE could be an incredibly pivotal entry in its iPhone range and offer customers with phablet-fatigue some much-needed respite.

Predictions & Expectations from Apple to Reveal at its March Event 2016

At the upcoming event of Apple which was supposedly scheduled on March 15, but was delayed for a week due to uncertain reasons, and now will be held on March 21. According to the rumors, Apple is going to launch some new products in this event including iPhone 5se and a new iPad.

New 4-inch iPhone 5se

By launching this 4-inch iPhone 5se, Apple hopes that it'll convince their customer to upgrade their device for a newer and faster one, which is relatively small. Instead of upgrading to 4.7 or 5.5 inch phone, Apple has switched to a 4 inch iPhone which would be much identical to iPhone 5s. As per the rumors the new iPhone will come in same colors as 6s-rose gold, silver, gold and space grey.

The new 4-inch iPhone 5se will include the latest Apple A9 and M9 processors and all the features of iPhone 6, such as the camera system, ability to take Live Photos, always-on Siri activation, and an NFC chip for Apple Pay.

A New iPad

Apple is also going to release a new iPad, but its features are still unclear. It is expected that this year Apple will also launch a smaller version of iPad, which will be apparently known as "smaller iPad Pro".

The device will be 9.7-inches and is said to include the following features: a Smart Connector and support feature for Apple accessories (Smart Keyboards and Apple Pencil), A9 processor, and a new camera system that will potentially have a rear flash.

New Apple Watch Bands

Rumors also depicts that Apple will also launch a new series Apple Watch Sport bands with new colors. These bands are going to be entirely new, developed with new materials. Apple may be partnering with some third party firm other than Hermes, may be an accessories maker, like Incase, as Apple has already mentioned it previously.

Updated MacBook Pro with Skylake

In this upcoming event in March, Apple is definitely going to announce something big. According to some trusted sources, Apple is planning to produce new 12 and 13 inch MacBook pro models, followed by a 15 inch MacBook pro in the third quarter.

The new Macbook pro is expected to have a touch screen, a new improved version of Skylake processor for better graphics, power efficiency and performance.

If the event happens in March, then we may also get the announcement of MacBook, else we will definitely hear about this announcement in June at WWDC.

Hybrid Application Development: Pros and Cons

Mobile apps can be broadly categorized into native, hybrid and web apps. It goes without saying that native application fully capitalizes all the features of a mobile device and its operating system. However, a web app lets you reach out to your target audience across platforms, reducing development time and cost. Hybrid application development offers a combination of both the native and HTML 5.

Native vs Hybrid Apps

There are several articles already on the net discussing the pros and cons of each development approach. A native app is typically developed for a specific operating system such as Objective-C or Swift for iOS vs. Java for Android. It goes without saying that the app is developed to leverage the features of operating system, follows guidelines of OS and best practices for optimum performance. The user interaction with app is consistent with other native apps on the device which helps user navigate the app faster. Native apps leverage built-in capabilities of the user’s device such as GPS, address book, camera and so on.

Hybrid applications are quintessentially websites packed into a native wrapper. Hybrid apps are primarily built using HTML 5 and Javascript that is wrapped inside a native container that provides access to native platform features. To put it in simple words, hybrid applications use a common code base to deploy native-like apps to a wide range of platforms.

Quick Overview of Pros and Cons

Advantages
  • Developer can use existing web knowledge
  • One code base for multiple platforms
  • Less development time and cost
  • Effectively design for various screen types such as tablets using responsive web design
  • Access to device and operating system features
  • Advanced offline capabilities
  • Drawbacks
  • Performance issues for apps requiring complex native functionality
  • Does not support all operating system features
  • Risk of rejection at app store for lack of native feel

Well, one of the biggest advantages of selecting hybrid approach is that your web skills can be used. Therefore if you have experience in web development it won’t need extraordinary efforts for your developers to create a hybrid app.

If you are pressed for time hybrid could turn out to be a feasible option because the app can be developed in one source code and released across different platforms, and development time is reasonably less as compared to that of native applications.

Hybrid App: Tradeoff

While the hybrid apps are easy to build; take less time to market, and maintain one code base, the flipside of hybrid application development is the user experience. A lot is at stake when it comes to user experience. The two most popular platforms Android and iOS are vastly different and there is simply no way to build a mobile app that can cater to users of both operating systems. After all, their styles and design guidelines are entirely different, making it difficult to create a hybrid app with superior user experience.

Is Hybrid for you?

Ultimately everything boils down to your business objectives and goals. It is important to analyze your target audience and their preferences. Based on your analysis, you need to decide whether your app needs to be on both Android and iOS. There are advantages to be present on both platforms, but do you really want your apps on both platforms immediately?
