Android Application Development – Few Things To Begin With

Introduction to Android Application Development

I am an Android app developer and this is my first tutorial on Android application development for beginners to guide them how to develop simple but effective Android applications. We'll start by the procedure of installing Android SDK with Eclipse ADT plugin, and using these two softwares we'll develop a simple program, "Hello World", So let's do it.

First-of-all, we'll learn about installing Android SDK

Requirement for the installation

»  I am using Windows 7 as operating system in this tutorial, the procedure may differ if you are using an OS other than Windows 7.

»  Java development kit is a very essential component for the installation, so just make sure whether it is installed in your computer or not. If it is not installed, than you can download it from the link below and simply follow the installation instructions link from the page.

»  As Android app development requires the basic knowledge of JAVA programming and XML based scripts, so if you are not familiar with these programming languages then you can download online tutorial from internet and learn java programming using them.

Installation of Android SDK

»  Download the latest Android SDK from this given official link according to your requirement: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

»  Choose your Android SDK according to your requirement, (I am using Windows 7 64 bit version, so I will download installer_r22.6.2-windows.exe)

»  When the download gets completed, extract the zip file in any folder of your choice, but remember that there shouldn't be any white space in the file path.

»  Now you can begin the installation by choosing the SDK platform that you need to install, you can also install various code samples, documentation and add-ons.

»  Congratulations, you're done with the installation of Android SDK.

Installation of Eclipse IDE and ADT Plugin

»  Download the latest version of Eclipse IDE & ADT plugins from the link given below. You can also download IDE and ADT plugins for JAVA developers.

»  After downloading the components, extract them in a folder.

»  Now, open the Eclipse IDE and choose Windows > Preferences

»  Choose Android within the setup and set the SDK location. Click Apply and then OK.

»  Now, we'll install the Eclipse ADT plugin. Choose Help > Install New Software...

»  Click on Add... Type Eclipse ADT in front of Name and place the path http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/ for location, as shown in the picture below.

»  At last, just check the Developer Tools and click Next to install. Accept the required agreements and follow all the instructions. 

Congratulations, you have installed Android SDK, Eclipse IDE and ADT plugins successfully.

Now, let's create the first Android program

»  It's very essential to make a new Virtual Device, before creating an Android project. Open SDK Manager and choose Virtual Devices in it. Click on New... to create new Virtual Device.

»  Check-out the picture provided below, and set all the options according to the given picture and click Create AVD.

»  Now we are done with Virtual Device. Next step, open File > New > Project.... Choose Android Project and then Next....

»  Check-out the two pictures provided below, fill-out the details accordingly and click Finish.

 

»  Now, it's the time to test the application, Click on the Run button and a Run As window will appear, choose Android Application. Wait until the Virtual Device appears.

»  Finally, you'll see a screen like this, and you have created your first Android application successfully.

Apple Unveiling New Smart Products & Updates at WWDC 2014

Apple announced some latest products and updates at World Wide Developer Conference 2014 in San Francisco, most of which will be available before the end of this year.

 

Controlling Gadgets & Home Appliances: 

 

This time Apple has introduced a new "Smart Home" technology that allow users to control gadgets or any electronic appliances from a single device. Various products that will work with it has been listed on CNET, products such as Philips Hue lighting system, a weather station, door locks and baby monitors.

Another remarkable feature is Apple Health, as it will integrate data from fitness related firms such as Nike. Apple executive Craig Federighi said that it will be a beginning in health and wellness technology.

What's New in the Software Update:

 

Apple also updated its Mac operating system OSX, also named as Yosemite and new iOS for iPhone and iPad with new feature to exchange files with-an-ease.

Now sharing would be a lot easier as you can share songs, videos, books and other important files between you mac and other iOS devices within a blink of an eye.

At the end, when Apple announced the new way of programming platform, it received great laud of applause from the audience of software developers.

"We have a new programming language. The language is called Swift and it totally rules," said Federigh.

This programming platform is designed to make programming faster and more secure for developers. There is also a guide available in iBooks for developers to assist them in developing iOS apps with much accuracy.

Mesmerizing Mac Design:

 

The new Mac operating system "Yosemite" will have a translucent design and that will showcase complete new look at your calender, weather and other information.

Apple has also expanded and its cloud storage, to provide users to store and sync any type of file, not the ones that are designed specifically for iCloud. Mail Drop facility will allow users to send large files. Instead of sending entire file via email and overloading the mail servers, simply click the link and open the whole file.

The default web browser for Mac "Safari", will have more privacy controls and easy ways to share links.

Yosemite will be available freely for user at the end of this year. A version is also available for developers to download, and a different version is also available for selected users for testing purpose.

iPhones and iPads:

 

 

This new iOS 8 software will feature interactive notifications, that will allow users to instantly check the incoming messages without leaving another app.

There will be new amazing gestures, just double tap the screen and chat with the people with whom you communicate the most.

Another "Quick Type" feature provides various suggestions. If type "I want to go to", then it suggests you words such "dinner" or "movie" or any other proper phrases.

A "do not disturb" swipe feature will stop displaying any notification, and other feature "tap-to-talk" will record and send the audio messages to the desired recipient and you don't need to type.

The new iOS update will arrive in the market with launch of new devices, most probably in the second week of September 2014.

Self Driving Car by Google With No Brakes & Steering Wheel

Google has been testing on Lexus since few years with self-driving technology, but now it has announced that it will test the technology with its own cars.

It's an electric car with two inbuilt seats and a screen displaying the route. There's a laser and radar sensors doing all the work such as braking, acceleration and steering wheel control. The car is favorable for self-driving technology with quite adorable looks.

The car will get all the required indications from Google maps. The driver can use its smartphone to provide directions to the car for reaching the desired locations via the simple app. The only manual buttons given in the car are stop/go and an emergency button.

Christopher Urmson, director of the Google’s self-driving project, told "The New York Times" that, the range of the car will be approx 100 miles equivalent to a Fiat 500e. The safety director of the project, Ron Medford, administrator in-charge of vehicle safety research and regulations told that the car has dual steering and braking system, if one fails, the car can rely on other.
